Hello! Sorry this one is a little late - I had to fly across the country today. Just as I was enjoying the fact that, for once, BC wasn't literally on fire this summer - I decided to fly to Ontario for a heat-wave. Good times.

So, let's enjoy something fun! Which we sorely need after my pick for favourite scene from S5.

S6 - The French Mistake - Sam and Dean Act

Why I chose this:

I mainly chose this because the night it aired, I was ON THE FLOOR laughing. When it's not first go, I tend to smile with mild amusement, because I know what's coming - but when it was new, it killed me with how funny it was.

In retrospect, I think this is both the pinnacle of how far Supernatural has ever reached towards absurdity, and also the pinnacle of them reaching and PULLING IT OFF. It was a brilliant masterclass of grounding absurdity in a core reality that made it believable instead of just ridiculous.

If I did a favourite frame per episode, mind you, I'd choose the frame of this episode with the police tape that had maple leaves on it. That visual gag really did me in the night it aired.

And they both do such a good job of lampooning really bad actors - with Dean being super stiff, obviously looking to his marks, reading the stage directions like they're dialogue...and Sam speaking like he's doing high school theater, not knowing what to do with his hands, exaggerating all his gestures, while having a little nervous breakdown the whole time.

Also, this is Jared and Jensen playing Sam and Dean playing Jared and Jensen playing Sam and Dean - how can it NOT be my favourite.

It's acting all the way down. This entry was originally posted at https://hells-half-acre.dreamwidth.org/560391.html.

The acting in this scene is so bad it hurts to watch it...which is the point, of course!

And what prompted you to fly toward the heat wave instead of hide in your nice, cool corner of North America?!

You have to know how to do something well, before you can do it that badly :P

It's more routine now, than a prompt. I'm originally from eastern Ontario, and my mum still lives here. Since I work from home, and can therefore work from anywhere, I try to spend a month home in the summer each year. I COULD go at other times of the year (and sometimes do), but I tend to choose the summer, because I really love swimming in lakes, which is something that I can't do in Vancouver.

I only moved out to Vancouver because I thought the community out there would better suit me - and I was right, I've been able to find some really great like-minded friends there, and it really IS a lovely city to live in. But I'm an Ontario girl at heart, no matter how much I like the west coast.

I do love explaining this episode: well, it's Jared and Jensen, playing Sam and Dean, playing Jared and Jensen, playing Sam and Dean! It't never not hilarious!

Exactly! :)

I could not enjoy this ep the first time around LOL It was waaaaay too embarrassing! Yeah, I'm the type of person that is plugging her ears and hiding under anything and singing "lalalalalalala" during these types of scenes, I just can't. I got used to it after more than several rewatches and I really like the parallels and some of the humor but not my favorite.

Usually I'm also the type to suffer from secondhand embarrassment and I can't enjoy things like this - for some reason, that wasn't the case with this scene. I think it's because I was able to detach myself from empathizing with Sam and Dean, because instead I just saw Jared and Jensen pretending to be bad actors. Also, I think it helped that Sam and Dean weren't like WANTING to do well - they just didn't care? I mean, they knew they were sucking, and they were just annoyed that it was taking so long, rather than feeling sad or disappointed in themselves.

Like, if someone is like "I'm going to do a flip and a perfect dismount and then I'll win the gold medal!" and then they fall flat on their face, and they come in last place, and cry - well, them falling flat on their face is horrible and not funny. But if they're like "you want me to flip? Ugh, fine, let's get this over with." And then they fall flat on their face, and get up and say "Are we done? Can I go now?" then them falling flat on their face can be funny.

I think that was what helped me get used to it after rewatches - but at first, I guess I'm watching it from Sam and Dean's point of view, not Jared and Jensen's.

That bad acting, no matter how many times I watch it, is too fakey for me. I think if Sam and Dean really tried to act, they could do a relatively good job of it. They make a living conning folks, they have good reflexes and Sam has been in a play. That's just me though. Most people love it so, *shrugs* :D

Yeah, no fair enough - and I think I also made the point at the time (or subsequently) that Sam and Dean actually act ALL THE TIME, and as, essentially, con-artists (because you also have to think about the pool sharking, as well as impersonating FBI etc) they'd be really good at it. I think that's why I can take the step back and just see it as the show making fun of bad acting, so I don't get the second hand embarrassment.

BUT, I also like the idea that because Sam and Dean have never been filmed before, they suddenly forget that they're good actors. I mean, I've been in plays before, but I still absolutely hate being filmed and feel way more self-conscious when on film than I do when I'm just on stage in front of people.

The fact that they had the guts to go for this just fills me with admiration. “We need to get all three of that crap,” still makes me laugh out loud.

Hahaha, yup. I love it.

This was such a hilarious episode. "That's fake me. This must be fake mine!" XD Poor Dean. But yes, this bit was soooo funny--so much so that I had to stifle a chuckle when "If we have a key, there has to be a lock" showed up in The Desolation of Smaug!

And yes, as my HS band director used to say whenever we did a "junk show" or played a Spike Jones medley: it takes practice to be that bad.

Yes! I also had to stifle a chuckle when they had that line in the Desolation of Smaug! :)

One of my all time favorite scenes--of any show! Still makes me laugh out loud. Love Dean scrunching his neck down like he's a turtle trying to hide in his shell.
