Clothing Names: A Poll

Ok, so, I'm busy plugging away at S6 trying to get these clothes catalogued, and I'm starting to wonder if I should revise my naming conventions.

My main problem is that up until now, with a few exceptions, I've been naming clothes based on how they look. Example: Dean's Marine Blue Shirt, Sam's Orange Plaid, Sam's Grey and Red Striped Shirt, etc...

The problem is that Sam has a LOT of different plaid shirts, and it all gets rather confusing to come up with different descriptive named for them.

The other thing I noticed is that when I'm actually cataloging the clothes, I call the shirts something different as I go. For example, Dean's Dark Buttoned Grey/Green Shirt is actually "Dean's S5 Finale Shirt" in my head, because that's the first time he ever wore it. Same with a couple of Sam's shirts.

So, here's my question:
Poll #1788195 Clothing Names
This poll is closed.

Should I rename the shirts to match what I call them in my head?

Yes, but only when those names are shorter
No, and get back to work, wench!
Yes, but only for new clothes, don't rename old ones
No, descriptions, even if some are similar, make it easier for people to navigate the lists.

Tell me what you think!

I mean, I like having Dean's Red Plaid Shirt of Angst, and Sam's Trickster Shirt...but those shirts generally always fit those themes. Renaming things could mean that we have things like "Sam's Re-Souled Shirt" even though it's not like Sam gets his soul back every time he wears it. :P

mmm I like names like "Sam's Trickster Shirt"! But i am thinking how people would generally search, which I think would be firstly by colour. (and then maybe by episode?) I mean you could call the entry one thing, but then have both on the master list ?

or maybe there's some way you could use tags...

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. I still have to do a listing by episode, actually - that's my next project after I finish S6 and do the new charts and graphs. SO MUCH TO DO.

Maybe I could do some sort of hybrid. I'll think on it.

maybe using tags for the episodes would be easiest?

I love thinking about cataloging - its one of the things I enjoy on the Wiki - trying to work out what goes where and what will be meaningful for people.

Hmm...I think actually creating a list would be easiest, just with the way I have the files stored on my computer. It'd be easier than adding tags to 100 posts.

I love thinking of cataloging because I research so goddamn much. ;)

Not having a listing by episode is the biggest week point in my catalogue so far. (That and Sam having way too many plaid shirts for me to come up with names for them all.)

I call it his Military Jacket of DOOM! Because he always makes bad decisions when he wears it. :P

But yeah, I guess the best names are a combination - The Red Plaid Shirt of Angst still has "Red Plaid" in there, and the Green Military Jacket of Doom still has "Green Military." So, maybe I should do that..."Dean's grey/green S5 finale shirt"? Then at least I'd still have the colour.

But why must he look so gorgeous while being a dumbass?!

This is a question I often have about a lot of guys. Hahaha

but at the same time I kind of need the ping because Dean wears the same five colors so many times.

Oh man, yeah. That's why I started to come up with alternate names. :P

I don't know of you've seen, but there is a SPN outtake clip Jared just posted today and we see the Red Plaid Shirt of Angst again!

:) Yes! I am very happy about it!

I think you should do whatever is easiest for you! Maybe have a table in one place that describes the clothing you've given name to...so if anyone is looking for Dean-dark buttoned green/gray shirt--see Dean's S5 Finale shirt. But I think you should do what makes it easy and fun.

Hmm, yes, consensus seems to be to do some sort of hybrid, where people can still search by description, but they also know my little names for things. So, I'll probably try to do something with that. :)

Although I do really like names like "Dean's Red Plaid Shirt of Angst" not everything will translate that plainly if you use personalized nicknames, y'know? You've still included 'red plaid' in that particular description, which will help people keep up, but since not everybody will conceptualize each piece of clothing the same as you, some of us may have trouble following along or searching out something specific.

I suppose you could always add "aka (TheNameYouCallItInYourHead)" to each entry?

Very good point! The best names probably combine the two things. And actually, that will help with my Sam's plaid shirt problem...because I can name one "Sam's Yellow and Grey S3 plaid" and one "Sam's Yellow and Grey Re-Souled Plaid." or something. Then it will be obvious that they are different shirts, even though they have the same colours.

That's a good idea! I think that'd work great.

Having the descriptions for the shirts has been helpful when I've been looking for something. However some of these clothes have become really associated with scenes or plot lines like the Shirt of Angst. Then it's really helpful to have that extra info. If you've got some like the resouled shirt, adding those names could help. Hell!Sam's shirt would probably stand out where Dean's shooting zombies at Bobby's shirt probably isn't all that memorable. However you do it, thanks for all the work on it. It's awesome.

Yes, it's looking more and more like some hybrid option is necessary - where the name still somehow describes the shirt. Because you're right, "Sam's Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid Shirt" really doesn't mean as much to other people as it does to me - because other people don't watch episodes and think "OOO New Shirt!!" :P
Oct. 21st, 2011 12:22 am (UTC)
I like a combination of description and significance (Sam's re-souled shirt makes perfect sense to me.)

Great minds think alike! That seems to be the drift of what everyone else is thinking too...this is why I need my flist - to point out the obvious solutions to all my problems. ;)
