I hate them.

I feel like starting a petition in support of the writers doing whatever the hell they want to do regardless of anyone's feelings.

Or, being REALLY contrary and starting a petition to kill Castiel and keep Gabriel dead and never have any time-travel episodes ever again...who else? Balthazar? He can never return too. And while I'm at it, I'll petition for the "Samulet" never to come back (I actually seriously don't think it should and don't think it ever will anyway.)

Listen people, no matter what petitions are signed and no matter if the writers listen to them or not, there is always going to be SOME decisions that you don't like in the story. Seriously, for every 10 people who would be thrilled for Gabriel to return, there are probably 10 more who will be pissed off that death has absolutely no meaning on the show. Same with Cas living forever without any character changes.

A television show is not a democracy, nor should it be, no matter how chummy the show creators and the fandom are.

Anyway...yeah, just thought I'd vent about all that. Personally, I think it's a spectacular kind of arrogance to presume you now how to write someone's story better than they do. I mean, Twilight is a misogynistic piece of crap, but THAT'S the story Stephanie Meyer wanted to tell - so more power to her. It was a hit with uneducated 13 year-olds, so yay for her....the rest of us have the option of NOT READING IT. I suggest you do the same with the show.

Because hey, maybe you don't agree with the direction the show is going in, but personally, I'm interested in seeing what story the writers are trying to tell - and I don't want a whole bunch of arrogant chefs forcing them to add more leeks to the soup when they don't want to! I want to have the soup the writers intended to make, then after I've had it, I want to be able to tell them whether I liked it or not or whether it could have used more barley.

/rant.

I shouldn't write rants at lunchtime...that sort of took a weird turn into the delicious.

(My apologies if any of you are Twilight fans - if it makes you feel any better, a good friend of mine likes those books too. Thankfully, because she's my friend, she's used to me telling her that she has the literary appreciation of an uneducated 13 year-old.)

Thank you!!! Sometimes fandom makes me so mad, I can't even put it into words and you managed to give voice to all my frustration perfectly. Now where are those Please let the writers do whatever the hell they like petitions?

Haha, I can't decide if I'd be feeding the trolls or not, if I actually started one.

But hey, it's good to know that people like you agree with me! :) So thank YOU!

I keep hearing from others on my friends list here, about how crazy the SPN fans are.. and I'm glad I stay away from the discussion forums. Cause man, I'd be pretty pissy if I read them I think.

I agree, I'm totally interested in the story the writers are telling and I really don't want the writers to pay attention to what the fans want. Write your story guys! It's like what J.K. Rowling said about how she wrote the stories and characters she was interested in. That's what WRITERS DO. In my opinion, if you write towards the audience it's about the money, not the story or the characters at that point. And the story turns into crap because of the too many voices interfering.

Like the SNL skit about the needs more cowbell.

I also stay away from about 80% of the SPN online community, I think. But what the crazies are doing always filters through somehow...

I mean, I could defend SPN fans and say that all the fans I've met have been intelligent and respectful - but I have to admit that I'm extremely selective in who I interact with.

That's what WRITERS DO

Have you seen the new BBC Sherlock? Because I totally read this in Moriarty's voice and it was hilarious. :) I completely agree, of course.

And finally - ah, the cowbell! You can only hit that thing so hard... :P

Hear, hear!
People should tell the version of events they'd like to see in fanfic. That's what it is for!

I am just so happy we have a show with such talented writers to begin with (and amazing actors to play out the stories)!

Indeed! When I realized that my wish for seeing Sam's soul returned couldn't POSSIBLY be fulfilled and be riveting TV, I wrote it out in fanfic.

Or you know, when I wanted to see the Winchester's meet Harry Potter, I didn't petition the show for it - I spent two summers writing 100,000 word epics that satisfied my every whim.

Personally, I sort of feel like these people are being ridiculous and petitioning the show instead of posting prompts in fic-memes. :P

I'll drink to that. :)

With you.

I would argue that uneducated 11, 12, 14, 15, 16 and older girls also liked Twilight too. I should know. I teach most of them.

Editing because I thought of a more serious point: the show has always acknowledged its fanbase and had a much more in-depth two way discussion than ANY other show I've ever come across. Do you think this has led to the whole fandom entitlement of YOU MUST LISTEN TO ME.

I would rather have some new characters introduced rather than recycling old ones. Equally, I do want my favourite character to survive a little longer... Dean just keeps on dying, you know ;)

I do not envy you. :P

Do you think this has led to the whole fandom entitlement of YOU MUST LISTEN TO ME.

Unfortunately, yes. I'm not going to say it was a mistake to have the meta-episodes and acknowledge the fanbase, because part of me really loves those episodes and thinks it's neat that the show goes there...but another part of me has to acknowledge that opening a two-way discussion might have been a mistake when it comes to certain fans' senses of entitlement.

I mean, if you think about it, it's similar to what happens to the boys at conventions sometimes - they decide to be nice to the fans and come say hello and take pictures and chat and be friendly, and certain fans take this to mean that they're entitled to hugs and kisses or being rude about the boys' wives. Just because Jensen smiled at you, doesn't mean that you can tell him who to marry. Just because Jared's friendly, doesn't mean you can kiss him. And just because the writers said "we love the fans, we love that they are passionate," doesn't mean you get to dictate the course of the show.

(I'm of course using 'you' in the general second-person sense - not actually referring to YOU, who are wonderful.)

Thank you!

My main issue with all these online petitions is that IMO they're a complete waste of time. I can't believe anyone associated with the show even sees them. Not to mention the fact that by the time fans want to protest something the writers are already about 3-5 episodes ahead so their complaints are moot anyway.

Oh, and I love the petitions to get Sera to step down as showrunner so Kripke can work on the show again. *insert sarcasm here* Kripke IS working on the show, people!!! He never left. He simply stepped down as showrunner, which is only one position he holds on the production. People act as if Sera is the only writer & makes all the decisions by herself. The writers all confer with one another, getting help and input. Kripke's in on all these meetings, too. I'm sick of people blaming Sera for everything they hate about the show.

/rant

Sorry I got long-winded. I can't vent on my own journal anymore and obviously I need an outlet. :P

Oh man, THIS.

You can always come have an outlet over here ;) I don't mind.

And YES, I find those petitions to undermine Sera so insulting - not just to Sera, but to MYSELF, because these people are acting on behalf of "the fans" and that is a group that includes me - but that petition does not represent me at all. Kripke still has final say over EVERYTHING, so the idea that "Sera is ruining Kripke's show" is ridiculous. Kripke obviously likes what the writers are doing, otherwise she wouldn't have a job at all! Plus, showrunner has nothing to do with writing, really...from what I understand, it's mainly just a managerial position.

I figure the writers are online enough that they MUST see them or at least know of their existences...but I also think they are useless, because they don't tell the writers anything they don't already know. It's OBVIOUS that people like Castiel, just like it was obvious back in S3 that most people didn't like Bela (even though some people DID like Bela).

Really, all these petitions are accomplishing is making an ass out of the people who make/sign them and pissing me off. :P

Actually I'm working on a letter to Sera right now - thanking her for a great season!
Compared to other shows I've watched this last week, Supernatural is still the best and most entertaining show!
Although I have plenty ideas for fan fiction, I've never come up with anything nearly as good as the real scripts for Supernatural.

Yay for you! :)

Supernatural is basically the only one hour drama that I watch and haven't lost interest in - which is really saying something. Actually, I think it's the longest that I've ever held interest in a show - usually by the fourth or fifth season, I just sort of wander away.

Maybe I should write them a letter too.

Thank you! I often feel like I’m the only one who realizes TV doesn’t involve us-the-audience personally. Besides, if the fans get to dictate everything, then you know they’ll vote off all the conflict and struggles -- which is what makes any story interesting. ‘And they lived happily ever after’ needs to come at the end of the thing, not halfway through the journey. Plus, if there’s a vote or a petition, then where is the surprise? I like being surprised.

I mean, if I were put in charge of the show, it'd be nothing but hugs and cuddles - which tells me that I shouldn't be put in charge of the show, because I wouldn't watch that crap! ;)

As a fan, I see the actors' talent and the writers' narratives as a gift to me and I don't feel any sense of entitlement.

YES! Someone I follow on twitter (and for the life of me, I can't remember who, sadly) was talking the other day about the price of book production and how when you are buying a book, you aren't buying A BOOK, you are buying THE WORDS - meaning, that you are purchasing someone else's creativity. When you watch a show (and therefore support it) you are doing the same thing - you are basically saying, "I am interested in the creative mind behind this product" - to think that you can then dictate the story is completely contrary to the original "purchase", because then you are only interested in your OWN creative mind. The writers have offered their creativity for purchase - if you are not interested in their creativity and only your own, then you shouldn't be purchasing their creativity at all.

Which, yes, leads us right into fanfic - which is there for the sole reason that it allows us to be interested in our own creativity AS WELL AS the creativity of the writers.

As for me, I know I have certain views and inclinations about episodes others may not have.

Same here. I liked Ruby2.0, for one - though, that does not mean that I'm not happy with her end. Also, I have a crazy kink for swearing - so I absolutely love Ghostfacers - even though I know some people (like you) don't like that episode at all. I know that you LOVE the throwing-up scene in Mallus Mallificarum, but I hate vomiting and actually kind of loathe that episode. Everyone is different! That's what makes humans so interesting!

but despite finding it highly-addictive summer popcorn fare, I definitely agree with your assessment that it is poorly written and frankly a misogynistic piece of crap. But on the other hand, that's the story Meyer wants to tell and I love that she told it the way SHE wanted...

My friend was the same way "I KNOW it's crappy, but I can't put it down!" Hahaha.

I'm sure there are books that I've read and loved that have been horrible pieces of literature as well. But that doesn't mean that they should never have been written - plus, from a historical standpoint, how a book is written can tell us a lot about the time in which it was written - so even crappy literature has it's place.

They are annoying in their ubiquity, aren't they? I mean, when they were kind of rare, that was one thing. Well, sort of. I can't even imagine ever joining such a thing- mortifying doesn't even begin to cover it. But you know, it was less annoying when it was still not the first reaction of every damn fangirl out there.

Also- there's a petition for more time travel? Because I could do with a whole season in the vein of the western episode. C'mon! Who could resist happy!cowboy!dean?. Happy!Cowboy!Dean. It could be like Justified! But 150 years ago! With monsters!

Anybody?

Haha, it's actually a petition to have Matt Cohen back on the show (presumably resuming his role as young-John), I just didn't want to say his name directly, because I didn't want it to seem like I had anything against Matt Cohen...so, I said "time-travel" instead.

I have nothing against time-travel though...even I cannot resist Happy!Cowboy!Dean ;)

I 100% agree with your rant, and thanks for ranting. This is my ranty icon!

I think there is one kind of good petition -- the kind where fans sincerely off their thanks for such a great show. Sending little notes of cheer to the actors, writers, and crew is a great idea -- like those card books that people sometimes present to Jared or Jensen, the awesome post card showers to the crew, or that time that fandom bought Kripke a page in Variety -- now THAT i can get behind.

The rest of it -- where people try to claim they know best how to write the show? Is bullshit. The anti Sera stuff particularly is misogynist crap.

If a show loses me, it loses me, no hard feelings... it's kind of like accusing a band of selling out -- bullshit. people change. Artists have a right to go where they need to go. they didn't freaking Marry anyone!!

Yes, I've sent a postcard to the production offices before and I contributed to the award for Jared that some people are organizing - THOSE are the types of fan-endeavours that I can get behind and support! Anything negative and misogynistic not only doesn't get my support, but also gets a RANTY POST! :P
