Rewatch S5: Two Minutes to Midnight (5x21)

I'm all excited because I only have two episodes left (now one), so I'm thinking I could actually finish this up this weekend and then post my timeline! Yay! I wish the timeline was better-but it's Show's fault for not giving me any clues at all. They've even stopped putting the date on their newspapers.

Pestilence is so disgusting. I like that actor. It's really cool how Supernatural is able to get these awesome actors that are just made for these sorts of parts. Death is awesome too.

"Did you know about this? About Sam's genius plan to say yes to the devil?"
*Bobby nods*

-Ah, inadvertent foreshadowing of things to come..also, the first time I saw this, I was trying to decide if Dean was maybe a little drunk. There was just something about the look on his face and the delivery of the lines. I still wonder about it.

"You can't do this"
"That's the consensus"
"Alright, awesome. End of discussion. *phone rings*. This isn't over!"

-Hahah, Dean, you can't declare an end of discussion and then in the next sentence indicate that there is still discussion to be had? Make up your mind!

Where the heck is Delacroix? Or am I just spelling it wrong? Anyway, that's where Cas appeared.

"What do you mean? You're out of angel mojo?"
"I'm saying that I'm thirty, and my head aches. I have a bug bite that itches no matter how much I scratch it. I'm just incredibly..."
"Human. Wow. I'm sorry."

-Oh Human!Cas, how I want to cuddle you. I hate bug bites.

"Dean, you said no to Michael. I owe you an apology."
"Cas, it's okay"
"You are not the burnt and broken shell of a man that I believed you to be."
"...Thank you. I appreciate that."
"You're welcome" *click*

-Oh Cas...never change. I love how absolutely sincere he is, and how he doesn't realize that his apology is an insult. :P

I love Dean constantly falling asleep sitting up while they are watching the security cameras. That's such a lifestyle-acquired talent.

"Sir, the Winchesters are here, we should go"
-I love the idea of the Winchesters instilling fear in the things they Hunt...especially high-level things they hunt.

"We're under strict orders not to kill the vessels"
"Well if Satan wants the so bad, he can GLUE THEM BACK TOGETHER!"

-I just liked this exchange. I don't really have anything to say about it.

Syphilis...poor Sammy. For someone who hardly ever gets laid, he's sure been getting a lot of STDs this season.

"Now, on a scale of 1 to 10, how's your pain?"
-This line reminds me of the pit of despair scene from The Princess Bride. Awesome.

"Well look at that - an occupied vessel, but powerless. Fascinating. Not a speck of angel in you, is there?"
*Cas cuts off his fingers*
"Maybe just a speck."

-Love it! I also love the fact that Cas got to do some Horsemen 'slaying'! Woo! See Cas, you aren't useless!

"Go ahead, tell them. There's no shame in it."
"Bobby? Tell us what?"

-Man, I love angry Sam.

"Did you kiss him?"
"Just wondering!"
"Ah hem" *shows them the picture*
"Why'd you take a picture?"
"Why'd you have to use tongue?"

-Sam and Dean's faces throughout this are PRICELESS...but I especially love the look they give Bobby after Crowley's final line there. Brilliant.

*Sam sighs*
"Let me guess - we're about to have a talk"

-Hahaha, I love when the boys act like an old married couple.

"Dean, for the record, I agree with you about me. You think I'm too weak to take on Lucifer, well, so do I. Believe me, I know exactly how screwed up I am. You, Bobby, Cas, I'm the least of any of you."
"Aw Sam..."

"It's true, it is, but I'm also all we got..."
-Poor Sam. It's amazing how John Winchester was able to raise two boys with such self-esteem issues.

"You two are lucky you have your looks"
-Oh Crowley...so are we.

"Your demon lover, Brady, VP of distribution, Niveus....Ah yes, is that the sound of the abacus clacking? You all caught up?"
-It's hard to hate Crowley. Like I said in the last rewatch post - he got a little too Deus ex Machina for me in these two episodes, but I still get a kick out of him. Also, I love abacuses!

Death's intro is so amazingly awesome. I think it's one of my all time favorite Supernatural sequences.

Then Cas throws himself a pity party...and man, one of these days all these boys have to learn that Bobby DOES NOT TOLERATE PITY PARTIES! (unless they are Bobby's pity-party).

"Alright, well, good luck stopping the whole zombie apocalypse"
"Yeah, good luck killing death"

-Awesome. Also, it really shows how much the Winchesters have grown...even without Sam's next reference to the simpler times of Wendigos...we have them SPLITTING UP, but Dean is not freaking out about Sam's safety, he trusts that Sam can look after himself now. They've come a long way.

Bobby gets his legs back! Now, it's a lovely touching scene, and I love the little loving smile Dean gives Bobby. But, I must admit, after seeing the gag reel, part of me kind of wishes they had left Jared saying "You're finally useful" in there. I know it would make my disabled friend fly into a rage, but, personally, it just makes me laugh and laugh. But you know, it's nice to turn the moment into a sweet moment rather than a funny one...even though much like Crowley, it gets a bit maudlin for me.

Sam tells his Lucifer plan to Cas, and Cas considers it. We learn that Lucifers vessel has to drink copious amounts of demon blood. I think this is why Sam was dosed as kid - to make the vessel inherently stronger. I figure when God banished Lucifer and made these angel-possession rules, he was making it as difficult for Lucifer as possible to possess some poor bastard...so besides the bloodline issue, Lucifer's vessel would also have to drink the blood of Lucifer's creations in order to sustain Lucifer. That way, while Lucifer grew his army, as long as he was walking the earth, he would also be slowly leeching from his own army.

But, I have a question for Cas: How does Cas know that Michael has possessed Adam...he's been unconscious on a fishing boat, and then human in a hospital. Does he still have his subscription to angel radio?

I love cold killing machine Sam...especially since Jared's figured out how to do it without looking constipated. See my rewatch of 2x22 and 3x04 for times when he failed to not look constipated.

"Up ahead - big ugly building..."
-That building is down the road from my house! that's the 1st ave overpass they're walking under. If they tilted the camera just a bit to the right while it was on the building, you'd see the skytrain line. That's right...I live just up the hill from "The Warehouse where Death wasn't"

*Demon choking Sam gets head blown off by Cas* *Cas looks at the gun*
"Actually, these things can be useful"

-ILU CAS! Man...as much as I'm happy that Cas eventually gets his angel mojo back...it would have also been awesome to see more Hunter!Cas.

I think one of the dead bodies in the pizzeria is Jared's stunt double. There's a very Jared shaped dead guy in there, but I don't think it's Jared.

I'm going to start off by saying that this whole meeting between Dean and Death is really awesome, and really well acted by both actors.

"How old are you?"
"As old as God, maybe older. Neither of us can remember any more. Life, death, chicken, egg - regardless, at the end, I'll reap him too."
"God? You'll reap God?"
"Oh yes. God will die too, Dean."
"This is way above my pay-grade"
"Just a bit"

-I absolutely love this. I know there were a few religious fans who got up in arms at the idea of something being more powerful than God, or God not being immortal, or something...but the thing I love about Supernatural is that they ALWAYS put their own twist on everything. And I absolutely love this twist - because it basically means that Dean is now eating pizza with something more powerful than (what Dean had assumed was) the most powerful being in the universe.

Death equates God with life here, so it makes perfect sense that the only thing that can outlive life is death...then, once there is nothing left to die, Death will probably also cease to be...but there is will always be that final reaping, that prolongs Death's existance just a fraction longer than life's existence. Anyway, I just think it's really fucking cool.

"I'm more powerful than you can process, and I'm enslaved to a bratty child having a tantrum"
-That's how I feel every time I babysit.

"That'd better be a yes, Dean. You know, you can't cheat Death"
-But he does ALL THE TIME!

So, then we have this little tidbit with the rings, that fascinates me and we never really get to delve into it...but Dean is there playing with them, and he shows them to Bobby...and Bobby reaches for them, stops two inches away, his fingers shake, and then he seems to change his mind about touching them at all. It's the briefest thing and no one mentions it ever again, but I have to wonder if maybe the Winchesters happen to be the only beings on earth that can touch the Horseman rings.

"Look, I'm not saying Sam ain't an ass full of character defects, but-"
"But what?"

-Oh Sam, with family like this, who needs enemies. At least they are also asses ful of character defects too.

"Back at Niveus. I watched that kid pull one civilian out after another. He must have saved ten people. Never stopped, never slowed down. We've been hard on him, Dean, we've always been, but in the meantime, he's been running into burning buildings since he was what? twelve?"
"Pretty much"
"Look, Sam's got a darkness in him, I'm not saying he don't, but he's got a lot of good in him too."

-This makes me wonder...is the good nature or nurture? Is the darkness nature or nurture? Think about the other special kids...they all turned evil somehow, except for Andy. Was it just coincidence that Sam and Andy could overcome the darkness? Or was it something in the way they were both raised? Food for thoughts, anyway...maybe John didn't do SUCH a bad job, raising Sam the way he did...or maybe he did, and Sam would have been good anyway...

"I know"
"Then you know that Sam will beat the devil or die trying. That's the best we could ask from him. So I got to ask you -  what exactly are you afraid of? Losing, or losing your brother?

-Losing his brother.

I'm going to try to do Swan Song tonight, me thinks. It'll be SAD TIMES!
