Dean's Leather Jacket

Dean's Leather Jacket

There are a few inanimate objects on Supernatural that get royal treatment - and they all belong to Dean. There's the Impala, the amulet, and Dean's leather jacket. It's iconic and something we immediately associate with Dean. Before it belonged to Dean, it belonged to John - so there's no telling how old the leather is, how many battles the jacket has actually seen – it is well worn and beautiful. Dean wears it whenever he knows there’s no danger of it getting ruined. It’s really Dean’s superhero signature look.

Brand Information: Wilsons Leather (There are two models of this jacket. The standard "Wilsons Leather" is the one used on the show, the other model "M Julian by Wilsons Leather" has slightly different pocket seams.)

In the Pilot (1x01) Dean picks up the Leather Jacket from John's abandoned motel room on his second day in Jericho, right after showering off all the mud and right before getting arrested. He wears it for the remainder of the episode.

In Wendigo (1x02) Dean wears it while Sam and him do their preliminary research.

In Dead In The Water (1x03) Dean wears it for the entire episode, except when he and Sam dig up the bicycle and jump in the water.

In Phantom Traveler (1x04) Dean wears it when they go to meet Jerry and then again when they say goodbye to Jerry at the end.

In Bloody Mary (1x05), Dean wears it from when they arrive until they have to go to Fort Wayne for research (he switches to another coat for that trip) then again when it’s time to say goodbye and drive out of town.

In Hookman (1x07), Dean wears it from the beginning of the episode until the night Sam is arrested out on 9 mile road.

In Bugs (1x08), Dean wears it for the entire episode...except in the shower, of course.

In Home (1x09), Dean wears it for the goodbye scene at the very end.

In Route 666 (1x13), Dean is wearing his leather jacket in Bismarck, Kentucky, when he hears Cassie’s voicemail asking him for help and when he arrives to see her in Girardeau, Missouri.

In Nightmare (1x14), Dean puts it on in the final scene of the episode as he and Sam pack up and leave the motel.

In Hell House (1x17), Dean is wearing it while he and Sam drive through Texas through until the “second” murder (which is actually the first). He wears it again when he and Sam confront the record store guy about lying, and at the very end of the episode when Harry and Ed leave.

In Something Wicked (1x18), Dean wears it for the entire episode. He only takes it off when he wears a suit to the hospital (the first time), and when he is inside their motel room. This is one of the rare times Dean is wearing the Leather Jacket when he kills the monster.

In Dead Man’s Blood (1x20), Dean wears it for the entire episode, except for when he is at the diner with Sam at the beginning of the episode, and when he talks to his Dad at the very end of the episode. It’s another rare time that Dean wears the leather jacket while fighting the monsters.

In Everybody Loves A Clown (2x02), Dean is wearing it at John’s funeral pyre.

In Bloodlust (2x03), Dean is first seen wearing it when they arrive at the bar and find Gordon. He keeps it on for the rest of the episode. Again, that means that Dean is wearing it during the fight scenes.

In Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things (2x04), Dean wears it at the very end of the episode when he tells Sam about his suspicions of why their Dad died after Dean made his miraculous full recovery.

In Simon Said (2x05), Dean wears it from the beginning of the episode until they get to the Roadhouse to get Ash’s help. He’s taken if off by the time Ash finds his pants and hauls out his computer. Dean doesn’t wear it again until they return to the Roadhouse at the end of the episode.

In No Exit (2x06), Dean is wearing it at the end of the episode as he drives Ellen and Jo back to the Roadhouse and when Jo reveals the history between their fathers.

In Crossroad Blues (2x08), Dean wears it for the entire episode, except when he and Sam are in the diner.

In Croatoan (2x09), Dean is wearing it when he walks into the motel room at the beginning of the episode to find Sam recovering from a vision.

In Playthings (2x11), Dean wears it at the beginning of the episode when he comes into the motel room with coffee. He then immediately takes it off. The morning Sam is nursing his hangover, Dean walks into the room wearing the leather jacket and takes it off while he teases Sam. He has it on again when he and Sam break into the owner’s apartment to talk to Grandma Rose, and he leaves it on for the rest of the episode.

In Houses of the Holy (2x13), Dean wears it whenever he is outside, but not when he is inside – except for the very end when he comes back to the motel to tell Sam what he saw.

In Roadkill (2x16), Dean is wearing it during the flashbacks of Sam telling him about the highway and them doing research.

In Sin City (3x04), Dean picks it up as they are leaving Bobby’s, but we don’t see him wear it until they go to check out the bar. He keeps it on until he disarms the gunman and notices that Ritchie has disappeared. He wears it again at the very end of the episode when he talks to Bobby about what Azazel said.

In A Very Supernatural Christmas (3x08), we see Dean take off the leather jacket when he arrives at the motel and Sam puts forth the idea of the anti-Claus (until this point, the boys have worn suits). He then wears it every time they are not in the motel for the rest of the episode (we see him take it off every scene that has him entering the motel room.) The Pagan Gods also removed it when he was unconscious before they tied him up, but he recovers after they are dead of course.

In Long Distance Call (3x14), Dean is wearing it at the beginning of the episode when he and Sam are at the university and he gets the call from Bobby about the hunt.

In In The Beginning (4x03), Dean has his leather jacket with him for the entire episode. First, he is using it as a cover while he sleeps, even though he is laying on top of a perfectly good motel bed. When he wakes up in Lawrence, he is still using it as a cover, this time on a bench. He puts it on to go to the diner and stalk his dad. When he joins the Campbell’s for dinner, he takes it off while he eats. He then wears a priest outfit briefly. When he tells Samuel about the yellow-eyed demon and the colt, he is not wearing the jacket, but he puts it on again before he talks to Mary as he’s leaving for Colorado. He then wears it for the rest of the episode, until he wakes up back in 2008, and his coat is his cover again. He puts it on as soon as Castiel tells him to go find Sam.

In Metamorphosis (4x04), Dean is still wearing this jacket at the beginning of the episode, since the action follows immediately from the previous episode. He changes out of it after his fight with Sam, and before the drive to Carthage to check out Jack Montgomery.

In Family Remains (4x11), Dean wears in the final scene of the episode, when he admits to enjoying his turn as torturer in Hell.

In After School Special (4x13), we see in the flashbacks that Dean wore the jacket when he was a senior in high school.

In Sex and Violence (4x14), Dean wears it at the end of the episode when they say goodbye to Bobby.

In Jump The Shark (4x19), Dean is wearing it at the beginning of the episode when they get the call from Adam, and the end of the episode at Adam’s funeral pyre.

In Fallen Idols (5x05), Dean wears it at the very end of the episode, as he and Sam have a talk after packing their gear into the Impala.

In The Real Ghostbusters (5x09), Dean wears it from the beginning of the episode until the ghosts are destroyed.
Dean wears is for the entirety of Swap Meat (5x12). He only takes it off briefly while he and Sam are eating at the diner.

In Dark Side of the Moon (5x16), Dean is wearing his leather jacket during the Memory of he and Sam on July 4th 1996.

In 99 Problems (5x17), Dean changes into the leather jacket before seeing Lisa.

In Point of No Return (5x18), we see Dean fold and seal the jacket in a box addressed to Bobby’s house at the beginning of the episode.

In Swan Song (5x22), Dean wears it from the beginning of the episode until he says goodbye to Bobby after Sam’s death.

In Exile on Main St. (6x01), Dean reveals that he keeps the leather jacket in a storage box with other hunting supplies. This is the last time we see the leather jacket:

FATE: We all know that the Leather Jacket is invincible – unfortunately, in the summer of 2010, the leather jacket was stolen along with some other wardrobe, when the production office sent it down to LA for a photo-shoot. The leather jacket seems to have been irreplaceable. Jensen has reported that they’ve tried to get replacements, but that none so far have fit him properly.

Sadly, you heard about it being stolen when it was sent to LA for a pre-season 6 photoshoot? And it was a one-of-a-kind, so we won't be seeing it any more...

Yeah, very sad. We saw it folded (I suppose a different jacket folded to make it look like his) in the S6 opener...so, in my head-canon, he simply left it behind at Lisa's...maybe Ben took it, and it's squirreled away in a closet somewhere as a souvenir of the father he had for a year...but then, I'm slightly melodramatic.

I just want to say that this is an incredibly impressive project, and that you are awesome. That is all.

Thank you! :)

Mourns the Leather - the one and only jacket that was his true signature piece, and he practically lived in and it was stolen...

I'd like to let Dean loose on the asshole who stole it.

Wonder if they will ever have him wear the replacement? So much has changed this season, and it breaks my heart. First they took away all the jewelry, and now the jacket. It kinda sucks.

Mar. 15th, 2011 01:29 am (UTC)
Surprisingly, I don't care about the jewelry anymore - even the amulet. I did when Dean first trashed it, but now I think it's served it's purpose and it's time we moved on...

The leather jacket though - yeah, it'd be nice if they had him wear a replacement. In my personal head-canon, he just left it behind at Lisa's and Ben has it stored away somewhere as a keepsake now...I think that's a more fitting end then it just disappearing.

Sam still wears shirts from S1! No one notices that but me though, I guess.

stolen leather jacket
How sad it is that someone had to steal a prime piece of Supernatural...that jacket was just as part of Dean as his soul I will be so sad not seeing it anymore..

Re: stolen leather jacket
I know! It's horrible. Probably didn't even realize what they were stealing either - just saw something they could fence for $$

this is a really beautiful testimony to a Jacket. \o/

My very favorite thing here is how Dean uses it as a security blanket at the beginning of s4. Oh, break, my heart!!! *pounds own chest like a klingon*

So, he wasn't wearing it in 4.10 Dream a Little Dream of Me when his dream-self accused him of being a copy of John?
4.10 seems like a watershed moment for the jacket.

So: per season, he wears the jacket:
s1 = 13 = 59%
s2 = 10 = 45%
s3 = 3 (out of 16) = 19%
s4 = 6 (including when he wore it as a teenager) = 27%
s5 = 7* (one is a memorex in Heaven) ~30%

Prior to 4.10, he wears it in 28 episodes (out of 70 = 40%).
Immediately following 4.10, he wears it in 4.11, 13, 14, and 19.
Post 4.10, he wears it 9-11 more times (4.13 and 5.16 are both memories of being a teenager) out of 34 (30%).

It looks to me like Dean was literally taking on John's mantle in seasons 1 & 2, but in s3, after he made the deal, he didn't wear the jacket as much, despite having followed John's example. Then in s4, it became important to him again as a security item, even after his dream self accused him of being just a copy of John. He wears the jacket to John's pyre 2.2, to Adam's pyre 4.19, and in 5.22, but not in 5.10 when Ellen and Jo are killed and also not in 5.04 when he is Fearless Leader.

I guess, in a way, it's fitting that it doesn't appear in s6, after Dean has tried to leave the Hunting life? It's still sad though that the very last time we see it is folded up at Lisa's? :(

Okay, I just did math for an hour. Thanks for that! :P

Mar. 16th, 2011 03:44 pm (UTC)
Thanks for sharing the math with me! That's cool!

I think it's also a lot about becoming his own man - because Dean always tried to be his father and defined himself around his brother...and in S3 he starts moving away from idolizing his father so much and losing himself in being a copy of John...and by S6, Dean has not only been out of Hunting for a year, but he's also finally begun to define himself as something more than "Sam's protector."

Also, you have to remember that Dean very very rarely wears the jacket when there is any chance of it getting damaged...which is why he couldn't wear it in Dream a Little Dream of Me. (Demon Dean is wearing the same thing as he is, and he gets shot in the chest).

Personally, I like to think that he left the Leather Jacket behind as a gift/keepsake for Ben.

Did you happen to notice if John is wearing the same coat in the flashback sequences of "Something Wicked?"

I have always assumed that it was the same jacket, but wondered if you had/could confirm(ed).
Mar. 21st, 2011 07:53 am (UTC)
It's actually a different one. If you click on the link above (in the description of the jacket) it will take you to a page where I discuss the Jacket's ownership time-line a bit...there's a cap in there that shows the differences between the two coats. Different seams, buttons, and collar - so definitely a different coat. So, really the only evidence we have that the coat was once John's, is the fact that Dean tells us it was in S3's Dream a Little Dream of Me.

That's so sad about the leather jacket, it's such a loss.
Dec. 30th, 2011 08:23 pm (UTC)
Indeed. It was such an iconic peace of wardrobe.
May. 21st, 2012 11:54 am (UTC)
I did not like this one actually haha
May. 21st, 2012 05:53 pm (UTC)
You are in a minority there! Mind you, it WAS always a little too big on him.
Aug. 4th, 2012 02:26 pm (UTC)
I saw this jacket in season 7, it was recycled footage of dean with his lighter when he was burning bones, I can't remember which episode but I thought I should let you know. Thanks

Re: w
Interesting. I'll keep my eye out for it. :)

If only the person who stole it was an actual supernatural fan. They could send hand-cut ransom letters:

BriNg bAck eLLeN or THe jaCKet GeTS IT

And at the next interview, the scriptwriters would make pointed comments about how Dean's wardrobe changed with his character.

i'LL giVE it BacK IF you dO a VOIcemail FiX-it. PLeaSe?

At the next convention, Jensen would be like, "Not to be rude, but, new deal: you bring back the jacket and Dean might wear it once or twice."

If whoever stole it sold it, I wonder who they'd sell it to. It seems like it's only really valuable to a fan, who'd probably want Jensen to have it until the end of the series.
Nov. 10th, 2012 05:41 am (UTC)
Hahaha, yeah, if only - that would be kind of hilarious - though that poor conniving fan would by chased out of town with pitchforks by the rest of fandom. :P

I figure leather jackets are always somewhat valuable. So, who knows. It could be walking around LA at night on the back of some guy who bought it off someone on the street... it's a mystery.

And then Jensen helped design that new leather jacket for Dean that was all shiny and a little bit orange - and then they had him wear it to purgatory where it got the shit kicked out of it. So, who even knows if it's coming back! Dean has just had horrible luck with his jackets since the apocalypse. Maybe that's his punishment for defying heaven. :P
Mar. 11th, 2013 09:29 pm (UTC)
Really miss the leather jacket was there a reason why Dean hardly wore it in season 2 and 3?
Mar. 11th, 2013 09:32 pm (UTC)
Not that I know of.

I miss the jacket too. It was a good one. :)

Such a shame
That they don't get a replacement one, know it wouldn't be identical but having one simular would be better then nothing. Can't see why though they needed it for promotional photo shoots most of the promotional photos have them wearing clothes that we never see in the episodes such as these:

Have always wondered why they would risk it. such a shame I hate the b@stard who stole it!!! fyi i'm ext_1687262 created a new account cause forgot the login details for the e-mail.

Re: Such a shame
Yeah... apparently they've tried to get replacements but none of them fit right. Seems far fetched to me, so maybe they just decided that it wasn't worth it.

But yes, a big shame it was stolen, and I'm sure it's a risk with the clothes that they're not going to take again.

I have my own hero jacket!
I know Dean Winchester shows off his hero jacket very well, but I have my own and it fits perfectly and yes, it's the same one he did own on the show. My second name is Winchester in real life, so you could say, I'm his bastard child carrying on the family name ha! ;)
