Dean's Black/Dark Blue Utility Coat

Dean's Black/Dark Blue Utility Coat

This coat has four large front pockets that come in handy for carrying M&Ms (or guns). The collar is worn and a little frayed, though it's only noticeable in later episodes on close-up shots. It appears either black or dark blue, depending on the lighting and how much of the colour has been washed out of the episode.

Brand Information: M-65 by Alpha Industries modified by the wardrobe department (Dean's version does not have the zipper across the back of the neck nor the shoulder straps). (Old Navy had a similar coat  - see comments)

APPEARANCES:

(Note: There is a continuity error in the Pilot (1x01), in which Dean actually jumps into a Magic Muddy Coat-Changing River, and the Black Utility Coat stands in for a muddied version of Dean's Chocolate Utility Coat for a few scenes.)

It first appears in Wendigo (1x02), Dean wears it on the hike into the words, and the subsequent hunt of the Wendigo. It gets a little muddy, but survives.

In Bloody Mary (1x05), Dean wears it for the trip from the trip to Fort Wayne until they confront Mary, only taking it off briefly between the two events while he covers all the mirrors in their hotel room.

In Skin (1x06), Dean switches to his Blue Utility coat after the shapeshifter steals the other coat he was wearing. He wears it from the morning after Becky is attacked until the end of the episode.

In Home (1x09), Dean is wearing it upon arrival in Lawrence and only takes it off while they make the anti-poltergeist hex-bags at Missouri’s. He also switches to his Leather Jacket for the goodbye scene.

In Faith (1x12), Dean wears it on the trip Nebraska and during his healing.

In Route 666 (1x13), Dean is wearing his Blue Utility coat every time he is outside once he is in Girardeau, Missouri, (and only once inside – briefly before Cassie shoves it off of him), except for when he and Sam interview the old men on the pier (then he is in a suit).

In Hell House (1x17), Dean wears it when he and Sam go to the Hell House after the “second” murder (which is actually the first). He puts it back on to go by itching powder – then wears it to the coffee shop with itchy Sammy, and to go see Ed and Harry with the false information. He takes it off briefly while waiting at the diner for them to update their website, but is wearing it again for the main action of the episode.

In Provenance (1x19), Dean wears it at the end of the episode when Sam says goodbye to Sarah.

In Salvation (1x21), Dean wears this coat whenever he is not inside a motel room.

In Devil’s Trap (1x22), Dean wears it whenever he is not indoors, the only exception is when they first get to Bobby’s house, Dean does not take off his coat until after Meg arrives. He is also not wearing it in the car at the end of the episode.

In Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things (2x03), Dean wears it in the car on the way to see their mother’s grave, but takes it off and walks around without it when they get there. He puts it on again when they go talk to Angela Mason’s father at the university and when he breaks into Angela’s house, but does not have it on when he is at the motel between the two events or after he gets back from Angela’s. He puts it back on when he and Sam question Angela’s friend Neil. Takes it off when he is digging the grave. Put’s it back on when they go to see Angela’s father for the second time. Does not have it on when they are at the motel afterward. He wears it again when they go break into Neil’s house and finally track down and re-kill Angela. When they bury Angela, he isn’t wearing it, but he is carrying it as they head back to the car.

In The Usual Suspects (2x07), Dean wears it for the entire episode.

In Croatoan (2x09), Dean wears it from the drive to Rivergrove until the end of the episode.

In Playthings (2x11), Dean is wearing it upon arrival at the Pierpont Inn. He takes it off when they settle into the hotel room, and only puts it back on after the guy hangs himself – he leaves it on while dealing with a drunken Sam, but has switched jackets by the next morning.

In Tall Tales (2x15), Dean is wearing it in the flashbacks of him and Sam investigating the strange occurrences at the university. The only time in the flashbacks that he is not wearing it is when Dean tells HIS version of what happened at the bar with the girl he met and when they check out the office (they wear costume jackets). He also takes it off in the flashbacks whenever he enters their hotel room.

In Folsom Prison Blues (2x19), Dean is arrested wearing this jacket at the beginning of the episode. They allow him to wear it until he reaches the prison, and then he changes into a prison uniform.

In All Hell Breaks Loose Part 2 (2x22), Dean is wearing it when he and Sam arrive at Bobby’s. He takes it off briefly while they research, but wears it when they go after Jake.

In The Kids Are Alright (3x02), Dean wears it for the whole episode, except when he and Sam are at the motel preparing to rescue the kids.

In Bedtime Stories (3x05), Dean wears it for the entirety of the episode, except when he is wearing a suit or sleeping.

In Ghostfacers (3x13), Dean wears it at the end of the episode when he and Sam watch the video.

In Are You There God? It’s Me, Dean Winchester (4x02), Dean wears it when they go to check on Olivia and the other Hunters. He takes it off when they are hanging out in the panic room, but puts it back on when it’s time to get down to business and protect Bobby while he does the spell. When Dean is sleeping at the end of the episode, he is lying on top of a sleeping bag and using this coat as a cover.

In It’s The Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester (4x07), Dean is wearing it when he enters the motel room eating candy and Sam tells him about the contents of the hex bag they found at the first victim’s house. He takes it off as they talk though. He then wears it again when he is staking out the victims house after the second murder – and then takes off it off again once he gets back to the motel and Sam tells him about Samhain. He is wearing it again when they return to the motel after failing to track down the teenage girl witch and discover Castiel and Uriel waiting for them. He keeps it on for the rest of the episode.

In I Know What You Did Last Summer (4x09), Dean wears it at the end of the episode when he and Sam meet up with Ruby and Anna at the cabin. It is therefore the also the coat Dean wears throughout Heaven and Hell (4x10), except, of course, when he has sex in his car.

In Death Takes A Holiday (4x15), Dean wears it from the beginning of the episode until the attempted séance in the graveyard, taking it off when he is in the motel.

In Lucifer Rising (4x22), Dean wears it for the entire episode.

As well, Dean wears it in Sympathy for the Devil (5x01) whenever he is not inside the hotel room.

In Good God Y’all (5x02), Dean wears it from the beginning of the episode until they defeat War.

In Changing Channels (5x08), Dean wears it to go hunt down the Trickster. He is forcibly changed out of it when the Trickster traps them in “TV Land.” He is wearing it again when he and Sam believe they have successfully killed the Trickster and escaped. Back at the motel, when he realizes Sam is not around, he puts this coat back on before going to his car to find Sam.

In Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid (5x15), Dean wears it once he and Sam take off their suits. He only takes it off when he is eating pie (both times) in Bobby’s house.

In Dark Side of the Moon (5x16), Dean is wearing it when they enter Sam’s memory of Flagstaff, Arizona. He keeps it on for the rest of his time in heaven until he is resurrected on earth.

In 99 Problems (5x17), Dean puts it on after he gets out of the car upon arrival in Blue Earth, MN. He wears it for the rest of the episode, only taking it off while he’s in the motel room – except for when they are patching Castiel and the minister up at the end of the episode. Dean changes into his Leather Jacket before seeing Lisa.

In Weekend at Bobby’s (6x04), Dean is wearing this coat when he and Sam find the claw next to the victim in the park and call Bobby for help in identifying the creature. He doesn’t have it on whenever he is seen inside the motel room, but otherwise he wears it for the rest of the episode.

In Family Matters (6x07), Dean wears it when they go to the Campbell compound to check if Samuel has his soul. He keeps it on for the rest of the episode.

In Appointment in Samarra (6x10), Dean wears it for the entire episode, only taking it off to allow Dr. Robert to kill him (and therefore also when he is talking with Tessa and Death), and when he is explaining the plan to Bobby and Sam inside Bobby’s house afterward.

In ...And Then There Were None (6x16), Dean wears this coat to the cannery to hunt the monster.

In Mommy Dearest (6x19), Dean wears this coat to Grant’s Pass, Oregon. He wears it for the rest of the episode.

In The Man Who Would Be King (6x20), Dean wears this coat from the beginning of the episode until after they leave Cas in the ring of fire. He is not wearing it for the final scene.

In Defending Your Life (7x04), Dean wears this coat to the graveyard to look at the headstone of their suspected ghost car-accident victim. When they are back at the motel researching her, he has taken off the coat. After they burn her bones, they return to the motel once again and we see Dean sit down and take off the coat. He then wears a suit again briefly, before wearing the coat to the apple farm. He wears it until after his trial, but has taken it off when we join back up with the brothers at the motel again.

In Season 7, Time for a Wedding (7x08), Dean wears this coat from the beginning of the episode until the cheating crossroads demon is released to Crowley. He only takes it off when he wears a suit to Sam’s wedding and while investigating civilians with Garth.

In Adventures in Babysitting (7x11), Dean wears this coat when he goes to visit Frank. He takes it off  when he and Frank change into costumes to look at the field, and after he and Frank hack into the surveillance, at which point Dean falls asleep, but otherwise he wears it until he rescues Sam.

In Repo Man (7x15), Dean is wearing this coat upon arrival (in present time) in Coeur d’Alene. He changes into a suit briefly to investigate the case, but then wears this coat again when he and Sam track down Jeffrey in the alley and until the end of the episode.

In Of Grave Importance (7x19), Dean wears the coat for the entire episode. We only see him without it when he is inside the restaurant or the motel room.

In We Need to Talk about Kevin (8x01), Dean wears this coat when they leave Rufus’ cabin to go track down Kevin. He wears it for the rest of the episode, except when he is hanging out in the motel room the night before talking to Channing and when he is in a suit.

In Remember the Titans (8x16), Dean wears this coat when they talk with Haley on the picnic bench outside of their motel room. He wears it for the rest of the episode, except when he is inside the motel room, researching in the bunker’s library, and praying to Cas.

In Clip Show (8x22), Dean briefly puts on the coat when he is planning to go out and buy food, but then takes it off again when Sam has him look for files instead. For the rest of the episode, he wears it whenever he is not in the bunker.

In I’m No Angel (9x03), Dean wears this coat when he and Sam go to the homeless camp and then to Detroit, as they look for and eventually find Castiel.

FATE: Presumably confiscated by the prison authorities in Folsom Prison Blues (2x19), it miraculously shows back up again in All Hell Breaks Loose Part 2 (2x22). So, take that as you will. Really, the only way to explain this coat's longevity is to have Dean continually replacing it with the same style and brand.

I always figured that Deacon put their clothes in the Impala, it would have made sense with where the car was. Normally when they were arrested, it would have been impounded and the keys taken, which means Deacon would have had the keys, so I always thought that he put everything in the car and moved it for them to get to it easily.

Very good point. A similar thing happens in Sam, Interrupted - so perhaps before they were committed then, they planned similarly.

Better Option
There is a much cheaper and also slightly more accurate (less noticeable zipper on the neck) version of this jacket which can be found here: http://www.armynavyusa.com/Rothco-Black-M-65-Field-Jacket-8444-p/rtc-8444.htm?1=1&CartID=0

Another Brand Option
I managed to find a coat that looks almost exactly the same at Old Navy. It was on clearance so it was less than $30, regular price I think was $40 or $50. It has a hood, but you can zip it away inside the back of the neck collar.
